Feedback Comments
Feedback sheets were handed out to our class when we gave our planning presentation and the feedback received about our planning of our trailer so far were mainly positive. Some weaknesses or limitations were highlighted which will need to be addressed and sorted before we start filming.
Our plan to produce a social realist film trailer which represents youth culture in a negative way was positively commented on and our research into the film trailers such as Shank and Harry Brown were described as relevant and successful as we studied the common conventions of those thriller and action trailers. This allowed us to apply that to our own ideas and we decided to challenge the common feature of thrillers which is a male main character. Our decision to use a female youth as our central feature of the film was received well as it shows us taking on board common features of the trailers we researched and deciding to do something a bit more different and challenging.
The films we studied link to our planned demographic and the feedback we received agrees that the characters and narrative of the film would be aimed well towards our chosen audience of teenagers 15+ as our character, Erin, is aged 16 and faces problems and insecurities that many teenagers face in today’s society. Our theme of youth culture and social problems is also a realistic idea which adds to the social realist genre we want. The more violent scenes have been reviewed questionably, as they may be a limitation we face, as we cannot have the scenes too graphic as the certificate we have chosen is a 15 and you can't have overly graphic and violent scenes in film trailers. Also, scenes of violence would be hard to film and to try and make them look realistic, so a solution we could have is to film the build up to a violent scene and cut before hostility occurs which could work effectively when adding suspense and mystery to our thriller trailer.
The representations of gender and class support the social representation of our main character which has been reviewed positively. A limitation that has been recognised is how the stereotypes we are representing may be offensive or misleading to the public and especially those who fall into that stereotype so we will need to be careful in our representations. Also, our idea of having our main character’s personality and appearance develop and change noticeably through the trailer had good feedback and I think the idea would be effective when building towards the climax of the trailer, with scenes of action and violence becoming faster-paced and more frequent. This would also be effective when building suspense and anticipation among an audience.
Other limitations highlighted from the feedback we received included the fact that it may be difficult for the audience to understand our representation of the female character in relation to her problems which cause her to change. By featuring her mother’s alcoholism and her negative experience of being bullied in school would highlight that Erin is a lonely and unhappy character. By using dress codes and changing her physical appearance, Erin’s transition and change will be noticeable. Her actions and the events that feature in the later part of the trailer will also shown an obvious change as she acts in a violent and hostile manner which is a huge contrast to her quiet and shy personality at the beginning of the trailer.
